This is such a fun book. Where to start?1) The characters are each unique and have their own special touch. I found myself surprised how I was able to connect with each character. This ability is a rare talent that few authors can achieve. Though, if you've read his other books, this talent is not surprising.
2) The story: unique, intriguing, and unpredictable. I had no idea where he was taking the tale at times, but it was a great ride.
3) the only negative thing I can say about the book is the occasional language. It wasn't so much that it was offensive, but it was more than I would have preferred. That's more of a personal preference than anything else.
All in all, this book is a must read. I can't wait to see what Hayes comes up with next. He has made one permanent reader from now on.

Seriously, what more do you need to get you to read this?
Okay, so assuming you want more. The characters are all engaging, well written, and have unique personalities and even speaking styles. The mythology introduced is light hearted and doesn't get bogged down in technical details. And the bad guys actually have real understandable motivations for the things they do. Yea, they're still dicks, but it's not like some antagonists where you cannot remotely see where this guy is coming from, and it's obvious they ONLY exist to create a conflict for the main character because they have no humanity for the reader to connect with.
This was a fun story--very different from what I usually read. So when I started the book, my first thought was, hm-m maybe this book isn't for me.
That thought went away quickly as I continued to read about mythological pears, banished gods, and the gawd-awful Lawrence who thought he was so smart and in control of everything he was invincible. Who doesn't like to see these kinds of guys get their comeuppance, especially from a mismatched group of wannabes and a royal cat and a beer-drinking shark?
Pears and Perils was a fun story that was very well told. Enjoy!
Four Americans win a contest and end up on a tropical island, caught up in a conflict between local gods that ends up changing all of them.
Clint, in his twenties, adopted zen values--no desire--as a boy and is there only to help an friend. Falcon is an aging hippie. April is a type-A science college student. And Thunder is a happy go lucky frat boy, complete with a pink polo shirt.
Centuries ago, a god broke a rule and has sat trapped in a tree, waiting for someone to set him free. These tourists accidentally do that, but that's where the adventures begin.
It's a fun story, with some good comedy moments and it's pretty well written. I gave it four stars (not five) for language (some unnecessary cussing), brevity (not a very long story), but most of all for the stereotypical characters. I liked them, but they were narrowly written.
I will look for more by this author, though. Fun, funny adventure.
The indie book market doesn't often treat us with something that doesn't obviously fall into the high-fantasy, or space opera, or zombie/post-apocalypse genre. Seldom do we get to experience a story that is self-contained in less than two-hundred pages without having to wait for the next installment to see what convoluted new list of events our beloved snarky protagonist must wade through in order to find out why his best friend betrayed him, and where his lover was stolen to. I thought the days of reading a story that doesn't require fireballs, the ultimate sword of Voltron, and vampires hiding behind popped pea-coat collars, were over. Then Drew Hayes comes along, and using a minimal and oddly natural number of fantastic elements, writes a simple story about being alive. The writing is economical, rich, and amusing through every sentence. The characters are instantly likeable, uniquely motivated, and necessary to the plot. The setting is friendly and immersive. The plot is clever, and though some events are shocking and unexpected, they seem to happen naturally and never feel forced. It's simply a great story that's told expertly. Aside from a few typos, this is a complete and highly entertaining, feel-good book that I would recommend to anyone.
Really loved this story about friendship found in unexpected places. Looking at the profile picture of the author I wonder if Thunder isn't a bit of the author himself leaking through -)
I think this is a really underrated book. A lot of twists and turns and lots of adventure. What starts out as pretty straight forward, takes as many turns as a switchback going up a tropical mountain.
The characters vary between a career cutthroat businessman, a hippie, a frat boy/surfer, a couple of academics, islanders, a cat who's the king of an island, gods, to a beer loving shark. And, if the cast of characters isn't enough, read to find out how far some people will go for love, or money, or power.
This novel is like a proto-Drew adventure. It’s a solid, well written story, and very fun to read. Yet it isn’t brilliant like many of his later works, it’s just really, really good. You can see flashes of the brilliant character building that will come in his later works, and you can see he already knows how to tell an engaging story. It’s just not like eleventy thousand pages of amazing plot and twists like so many of his more recent books (Super Powereds Year Four comes to mind.) Anyway, I really enjoyed it, and if you like Drew’s work I bet you will too. Give it a shot, I know you’ll be glad you did.
