The books were interesting as far as an inside view of the jail/prison system from a medical standpoint. Having said that however, they were also very repetitive. Everything that occurred in the prison was similar to what happened in the jail system. It almost seems the two books could have been combined. The common themes in the penal system are 1) every prisoner says whatever they can to get pain pills, 2) few prisoners will follow medical advice, 3) every prisoner tries to work the system with legal "buzzwords", and 4) when all else fails they can always count on Mom to call and advocate on their behalf. And repeat, and repeat, and repeat....you get the idea. Dr. Wright seems to have an "attitude" of his own that I found annoying after a while. Maybe the attitude is needed to survive the job, but I don't feel it needed to be so pronounced throughout the book.If you have an interest in the inner workings of incarcerated healthcare, I would recommend reading just the book on the prison system, and skipping the jail system.

He is an excellent writer with a very unique perspective on prison life; from a medical doctor's experiences treating patients in prison. The book is a compilation of a lot of interesting people, situations and stories so you can put it down frequently, but you may not want to.
A surprisingly astute, insightful read. Lots of vignettes, but lots of serious consideration of jail management and funding. Would not hesitate to have a high schooler read it to get a feel for how politics and greed can affect the penal system. A bargain at the price.
Two of the most interesting and entertaining books I've read, based on two of my favorite interests the medical and criminal justice fields. The author is smart and funny, making his writing easy to read. If you've ever wondered what it was like to work inside a state prison or a county jail, this is a great point of view.
Whether you're looking for a good book to settle down with, looking for a fun read, or something even just to kill time while traveling, I highly recommend this boxed set. Enjoy!
Interesting subject but the writing was awful. How bad was it? I had a hard time believing the author achieved his level of education with his writing skills. He would talk about something then 3 chapters later he would define it. Well by then I figured out the definition. Many repetitious items and very disorganized and disjointed. It was almost like he kept a diary then decided to turn it into a book. if the author hired a proofreader he should demand a refund.
I am familiar with the Territorial and Women's facilities, as well as Canon City and Colorado Springs, so I was able to picture parts of and relate to many of the stories. Dr. Wright put such a comic take on sad stories. It shows that you have to have the ability to see humor to survive in situations that would otherwise sap everything out of you. I admire his ability to set boundaries when working with people who often try to manipulate situations and people around them. It's how know how to survive. I highly recommend both books, and find Dr. Wright and his presentation of the medical world in the Colorado prison and El Paso County jail system to be accurate. The jail system has, hopefully, been investigated and exposed and cleaned up. It's disgraceful when a sheriff can run corruption over a system and people be afraid to lose their jobs.
These books are better than any true crime novel, simply because they finish the story. America often has a "lock them up and throw away the key" mindset. However that is not the reality. People that have done heinous things do not conveniently drop from the face of the earth at sentencing. They continue on, with the added benefit of having three meals and a bed all provided. Dr. Wright gives great insight through detail, his own need to establish a system to safeguard his humanity from daily encounters with people that have done horrible things. His burden is increased as he must keep to the tenets of the Oath he took upon becoming a doctor. Each book allows us to see his success and struggle with trying to provide health care to crooks and criminals who,despite being locked up, have not quit their day jobs.

These two books entertained not only due to the author's wry sense of humour, but for the inside look they give us into the minds of the inmates of high, medium and low security prisons and the administrative power trips that can insue in the running of these institutions. The interaction that goes on between prisoner and doctor is amusing, while at the same time, I couldn't help feeling appalled and saddened that so many people in America are incarcerated for rape, murder, and yes, even vagrancy (only in America!) The doctor's forceful, pithy denials of medication to bored, angry sociopaths, whose sole purpose is to wheedle a drug hit, made me laugh and kept the book light. But at the same time, there is an underlying sobriety and frustration within the pages of each book. Colorado is home to a cluster of prison buildings - virtually a mini city of high to low security gaols whose citizens are thugs. Clearly there is a need in the US to address its laws and the problems faced in vast pockets of its society. Although Dr Wright only touches on such issues scantily, the build-up created by his pictures of life in prison easily made me absorb what he was saying about any type of reformation. He wants us to know that there are not many people of his calibre who can work within the prison system, and I believe him!
