Since those distant days when man's migratory instinct first prompted him to find fresh hunting fields and seek new caves in other lands, human energy has been constantly employed in moving from place to place. The fear of starvation and other elementary causes prompted the earliest migrations. Conquest followed, and with increasing civilization came the establishment of constant intercourse between distant places for reasons that found existence in military necessity and commercial activity.

For centuries the sea offered the easiest highway, and the fleets of Greece and Rome carried the culture and commerce of the day to relatively great distances. Then followed the natural development of land communication, and at once arose the necessity not only for vehicles of transportation but for suitable roads over which they might pass with comfort, speed, and safety. Over the Roman roads the commerce of a great empire flowed in a tumultuous stream. Wheeled vehicles rumbled along the highways—heavy springless carts to carry the merchandise, lightly rolling carriages for the comfort of wealthy travelers.

The Story of the Pullman Car eBook Joseph Husband

I grew up 3 miles north of the Pullman Car Works in South Chicago. They had a yard that maintained 300 Pullman cars for national emergencies. these cars were in the best of shape new roof coatings and no rust. If the car started to look shabby it was pulled out of line and sent to the paint shop and any other shop to be fixed...I was only 10 years old but was admitted to this yard because our next door neighbor was the chief purchasing agent and my father was an executive of a railroad. The book was very interesting to me and was very accurate. If you enjoy a book full of history of the Pullman Company and are close to the town of Pullman go out and walk around it. In the town center is where all the employees shopped . Doctors and dentist offices were and of course the old Florence Hotel. At one time was fully restored. My farther had a party for me when I came back from South East Asia. t's a book worth reading.

The Story of the Pullman Car eBook Joseph Husband Reviews

It is as if a series of light very favorable news paper articles were put together to form a book... without editing. There is a good deal repetition and the writing style is charmingly typical of advertisements or company literature the period. The few facts do however demonstrate that the Pullman Palace Car Company was quite impressive in its scope and scale. It is pleasant and quaint but has too little actual content for more than three stars.
It is OK
The quality of the copy is great. They even added some extra photos throughout to give a pictorial of the times and what was described. The story was interesting telling the evolution of the pullman car from idea to the end of the 19th century.
Good reading, a lot of history in this book.
There is little written about Pullman cars. I wish the book had gone into the 30's 40's and 50's with the changes made to the equipment.
However a good start.
I chose this ebook because of my interest in the Pullman Car Company. The author has provided a general overview of the company, but could have gone into greater detail than he did.
